It is So Good to Be Back.

The infamous text from Pres. Henrie in California.
He thought he was in trouble.  Then he found out he was going back!!

Hello,

I arrived in Madagascar last Wednesday after after leaving California early Monday morning; flying to Miami and then to Paris.  I Met Elder and Sister Miller in Paris and from there went the rest of the way to Madagascar arriving on Wednesday at 4 am.

This past week we have been preparing the arrival of 18 other missionaries.  The plan is to be having missionaries returning every week. We will be meeting two at the airport today. I think we have received permission to work anywhere in Mada now.

I have been working in the office helping out the Senior Couple missionaries. We also went around and stopped by the missionary apartments to make sure they are all clean and ready for people to live in them. There are six missionaries already down in Ft. Dauphin working, but the rest of us will be getting our calls this coming week. That is when I will find out where I will be working and who my companion will be.

On Sunday we went to the Tana ward for church and it was great being able to speak in Malagasy again.

It is so good to be back.

Sincerely,
Elder Allen

"OUR PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED"!

SAM  IS FLYING BACK TO MADAGASCAR MONDAY MORNING!!!!!,

click HERE to read article in the Deseret News about the RETURN of MISSIONARIES!!

Because he is flying today, he won't have a p-day to email home this week. So, I wanted to document this crazy situation for his blog and share with you some special thoughts and experiences from a mom's perspective and from my tender heart.

First of all, last Saturday, I read a newsletter that is sent out every week to all of the Mada missionaries.  It said, News Flash: We are going back!!!  I jumped out of my seat, I was so excited. I continued to read that there would be 12 missionaries sent back this week to help prepare for all of the missionaries to return.  They said the 12 would be coming from Reunion, Zambia, Durban South Africa, Congo, and CALIFORNIA!  No one knew who these 12 missionaries were.  Sam's P-day was bumped last week to Tuesday because of the holiday so I couldn't even talk to him until Tuesday.

Then he got on line Tuesday, he said; "Hi Mom!"  I said ,"Hi there, what's knew?"
He replied, "something very exciting is new.  I may be going back to Madagascar very soon."

He went on to say that Pres. Henrie in California had texted him..."Elder Allen please call me!"  He said he was nervous.  When he called, Pres. Henrie asked him if he missed Mada.He said "yes."
Pres. Henrie said, "do you think about it all the time?"  He said "yes."
Pres. Henrie asked if he "would like to go back?"  Sam said "yes."

Then Pres. Henrie said that Pres. Foote had called from Mada and was given permission to bring back 12 missionaries this week and Sam would be one of them.   Sam said his heart skipped a beat and he started shaking with excitement.  He was worried because he didn't have travel plans and he wasn't sure if it was too good to be true.  So we waited and prayed.  Then I saw the news release from the church on Friday night.  Saturday night, I received a text from a member in Sam's mission (Sister Alexander), it was Sam.  He said;

I am flying out early Monday morning with a Senior Couple
and I AM JUST SO EXCITED AND HAPPY!

SO IT IS REAL!!

He is on his way back to help President Foote and 11 other missionaries prepare for the reopening of the Madagascar mission.  He feels so honored to be able to go back.  The rest of the missionaries are expected to follow soon!!!  Quoting Pres. and Sister Foote and every Mada missionary and their parents, "OUR PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED"!

Just a few thoughts:

A Place PERFECT for Him ~ When Sam was deciding if he wanted to serve a mission, he prayed that he would be sent to a different mission that would be perfect for him.  I prayed he would go somewhere he would have to serve the people in rough conditions and he would realize how blessed he was.  Madagascar was an answer to both of our prayers.  He was blessed so much with great support from his friends and family as he went on this journey.  As his friend Ethan said, "our Sammy has left the shire."  He learned so much in the MTC and was blessed with an awesome MTC group of 13 amazing young men.  From the time he left the MTC, he has truly had crazy adventures. After flying 35 hours to Mada, they lost his luggage and as he drove through the city he realized that Mada was one of the poorest countries in the world.  The culture shock and the language barrier were tough, but he pressed forward with faith.  He saw people dig up their dead and dance with their bones, he saw flooding, walked through "poopy" water, had bed bugs eat him alive, rat infestation, he was thrown in jail for not having his papers, Cyclone Enawo destroyed his area, an earthquake hit while he was sleeping, he had chickens climbing on him, he taught lessons in shacks by candlelight, he had drunk people try to break down his doors, he even watched people die, and then the Bubonic Plague.  Madagascar did not disappoint!!!

A Loving Mission President ~ With all of the bad came so much good!  He saw the poorest of poor people love the gospel.  These people loved the missionaries.  They were happy and loving and always smiling.  He had awesome companions and roommates that have become lifelong friends.  He had amazing opportunities to serve.  He saw lives changed and his life changed the most.  His testimony grew and he truly became converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ.  He was very aware of a loving Heavenly Father who had provided a way for Sam to share the gospel message with these people.  He also had a loving mission president that would do anything for his missionaries.  He taught them, he counseled them, he ate with them, he played with them, he taught his missionaries that it wasn't about the "stats" it was about the people!  And he taught Sam through his example of love and service.  He had a mission mom who gave great hugs and took great pictures and always remembered the "moms" at home.  Because of this, these missionaries loved Pres. and Sister Foote and worked hard for them!

I Never Worried until Now ~ Well, as you know the adventures didn't stop there.  Just as he was in the prime of his mission.  He was training a new missionary.  Serving as a district leader.  And had many investigators truly interested in the gospel.  In fact, he had 10 baptisms scheduled.  That bubonic plague became a pneumonic plague and was spreading rapidly and killing many people.  This awesome mission president was being told he may need to evacuate his missionaries.  They put restrictions on them; they moved them out of some of the areas,  no public transportation, don't go into people's home, stay away from crowds...everything that missionaries need to do.  Finally they put the missionaries on LOCKDOWN!  Do not leave your apartment for 2 days.   Then they packed them up, were told not to say good bye or tell anyone so they wouldn't be exposed to the plague and then they gathered at the mission home.  The President was told he needed to have all of his missionaries out of the country in 4 days.  The evacuation began.  One by one each missionary was given new calls and flew out.  Sam's visa had expired and he had to wait and watch everyone leave.  Most missionaries were staying in groups in Africa.  Sam was called to San Fernando California and had to fly alone for 35 hours.  Parents waited patiently to hear from their missionaries.  Sam was the last to arrive in his new mission.  He was sad, exhausted, and confused and dirty.  He was worried about the 10 baptisms he had a abandoned. (He just found out they were all baptized in December!) But with all the craziness in Mada, I never worried about Sam.  Until he was sent to California.  I worried about Sam more during the 3 months he was in California then the  14 months he was  in Mada.  I cried more for Sam when he left Mada then when he left me to go on his mission.  He was so sad and struggling with the abrupt change and so worried about Mada.  I knew he was having a hard time.

Making the Most of the Situation ~ The adventures continued.  While Sam was in the Paris airport, an LDS couple let him borrow their phone to send me a text.  Pres. and Sister Henrie picked him up in California from the airport and let him call us.  They let him sleep and then they took him to buy some new clothes.  He spent 2 weeks in a threesome.  He complained more about the culture and the language barrier in California than he ever complained in Mada.  Sam was assigned to be a trainer to a new missionary who was supposed to be going to India but was waiting for his visa.  So they both felt a little like they didn't belong.  He was made a district leader and assigned a double area.  He was trying so hard to be a good missionary and he had been told he would not be returning to Mada.  Right after he got to California, there were some massive wild fires and mud slides.  Adventures seemed to follow Sam no matter where he was serving.  He was making the most of his situation and trying to work hard and stay positive.

A Mother's Prayer for her Missionary ~ Through this whole process, I have truly felt that Heavenly Father has been aware of Sam.  As his mom, I saw so many tender mercies and felt a comfort and a peace.  I received a picture or a text  from strangers who were with Sam just when I needed to see that Sam was okay. I would be reading in my scriptures and the story would directly apply to me or Sam and I would share many thoughts with him.  I would hear a talk or see an article that was just what I needed at that time and send it to Sam.  I have never prayed so hard for Sam.  I diligently went to the temple every week to put his name on the Prayer Roll.  I had many sacred experiences in the temple that told me his adventures in Mada were not over.  I had faith that he would return and I knew that was a righteous desire of his heart too.  I knew Heavenly Father had a plan for Sam.  I also knew he was called to Mada for a reason.  He had prayed for that before his mission and so had I.  I still don't know exactly why Sam had to go clear across the world for 3 months to serve in California.  I truly believe things happen for a reason.  Sam wants to study film for his career, he met many amazing people in the film industry.  There was a sweet Sister Alexander who helped Sam through some tough times.
Brother and Sister Alexander

Elder Peters

She invited him to her home for the holidays with her family.  She told me Sam had a special place in her heart. Sam told me the same thing about her.  Maybe he needed to meet Sister Alexander.  Maybe Sam needed to see 2 different cultures to appreciate his own blessings.  I don't know why he was needed in California for this time.  But now he is needed back in Mada.

Finally, I used to ask Scott, why did Sam have to go to California.  Why couldn't he stay in Africa?  Why couldn't he have stayed with the groups of other missionaries?  Why couldn't Sam stay with Pres. Foote?  Why did Sam have to travel alone and go to a mission with no friends?  Why Sam????  And Scott answered, "WHY NOT SAM?"  And now Sam has been given a gift; a second chance!  He gets to return to his mission with a new perspective.  He knows each day back there is a gift, a miracle of sorts.  He is honored to return with Pres. Foote and many other friends to his beloved Madagascar and prepare to reopen that mission.  He will see things with new eyes.  He will not take one day for granted.  He has exactly 6 months left and he is so excited and so happy to go back!!  And as his mom, I couldn't be happier for him.  Keep them all in your prayers as they make this journey...especially Pres. Foote.  There are still 60+ missionaries anxiously waiting for the phone call to return!  They have much work to do and the Lord wants them back!

Love,
Jenn

Sister Alexander sent this picture today and said this is how Sam has looked ever since he found out and told her he was going back to Madagascar. She said look at that happy sweet glowing face.  Sam called us last night and he was so pumped up to be going back today! It was so fun to hear him sound so happy!

The Gathering of Mada

“The Gathering of Mada
The Newsletter of the Madagascar Antananarivo Mission
“And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” (2 Nephi 21:12)
NEWS FLASH!!!
Proverbs 25:25 “As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.”

The Gathering is coming to Madagascar
President Foote just received word on Thursday, 11 January 2018, that approval has been given to open up one city in Madagascar for the return of missionaries! President has been working weekly with South Africa and the Missionary Committee of the Church for several weeks to make the news of the reopening reality.  It is believed that the rest of the mission will follow quickly.
This first wave of the return will start with 12 missionaries who will fly to Antananarivo on Wednesday of this week.  These will be missionaries returning from the Zambia, South Africa Durban, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Reunion, and California missions. After a few days in Tana, these missionaries will fly to Fort Dauphin, where there was not a single case of the plague during the recent epidemic, to begin proselyting once again in that city, reopening the land to full-time missionaries.
“Our prayers have been answered,” beamed an immensely happy President Foote over the phone.  Expressing his gratitude to all you missionaries, he said, “Thanks for continuing to work so hard and faithfully during this time wherever your assignment has taken you.  We ask you to continue to represent Madagascar well wherever you are in the world, work hard and prepare for the return.”
More news will be forthcoming in the coming few days and weeks.  But for now, we are going back to Madagascar.  Our thoughts and heartfelt thanks go to all those who accepted us into their hearts and missions and fields of labor, for those companions who worked with us and trained us in new countries and areas, for mission presidents who lovingly took us in, for God’s children in other lands we came to love.  It has been an amazing time.

A Thank You from President Foote

November 2, 2017

Dear Parents,

We have witnessed many miracles in the past few weeks during the transfer of our missionaries to their new assignments.  We have to admit our heartstrings were being stretched as we bid farewell to these tremendous missionaries.  They will certainly be a blessing where ever they go.

We were directed to have the missionaries out of Madagascar in just four short days. This made it difficult for them as they were asked to follow specific instructions, such as not calling investigators or members to tell them they were leaving. We are grateful for their obedience and it helped to ensure their safe transfer.  We felt of your support and prayers as we moved forward with the departures.

We look forward to the day we will be back in Madagascar.  Please keep the wonderful people of Madagascar in your prayers as well as these devoted missionaries.  This will be an adjustment for them as they work to build and grow the gospel in other parts of the vineyard.

Thank you for sharing your sons and daughters with us. They have changed our lives.

May God bless your family and this marvelous missionary effort.

Hello,

The mission here in California is very different but I am slowly getting in the swing of things. I still have a hope to get sent back to Madagascar though. I write my old mission President often and that is the goal as soon as it is possible.

The work here goes a lot different . Knocking doors is a whole new experience. American Culture is a little rude when it comes to visitors. People in Madagascar are a lot friendlier and enjoy talking to visitors.

Also, a lot of people do not understand what "No Soliciting" really means. We walked up to an open garage the other day and as soon as the man saw us he just says, "Oh don't bother me with that crap!" and then he walked inside. Another time we met a guy who did not believe in a God at all so I gave him a pamphlet and then encouraged him to try praying to God. He then asked me if I would try praying to Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. I just told him that I would try if he would try praying
to God. He refused and then called me stupid... i am just trying to have fun with it.

1 Samuel 16:7 King James Version (KJV)
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Some cool things about working in California are the members. We are fed almost every night. Also a lot of people in the ward have cool jobs. My Bishop is one of the four original animators that works for Disney. He still does the old style drawing animation for them when it is used. He worked on Aladdin and Hercules. One of his kids as a baby was what he based baby Hercules off of. Another guy is an artist for shows like King of the Hill and Futurama. It was fun chatting with them about those things. I am still meeting the ward and hope to find more people with cool jobs and stories like that.

Sincerely,
Elder Allen

Emotions - "Do you have the faith not to be saved?"

Hi,
Just in case you haven't heard, the Bubonic Plague has gotten too bad for us to stay in Madagascar so the church evacuated the entire mission this week and reassigned us all to new missions.  I have been reassigned to the California, San Fernando Mission.  It is a temporary assignment, but I only have 9 months left so this may be where I finish my mission.  We all have hopes of possibly returning to Madagascar by February or March, but not sure that will happen.

This is my first real day in California. It has been a long flight coming from Mada to South Africa then to Paris and then coming from Salt Lake to California. It was hard to stop in Salt Lake. It felt like i was coming home, but instead of seeing my family, I had to get on a fourth flight to Cali. It has been a hard couple of days preparing to leave one of the greatest places in the world!!

We have had restrictions placed on us as missionary and we knew this could be a possibility, but we never really thought it would happen.  President Foote tried really hard to keep us there but keep us safe. He is an incredible man.

On Wednesday we were put on lock down, which meant we couldn't leave our apartment.

On Thursday we got the call that we were being evacuated and leaving Madagascar after being told not to leave the house for two days.  We were told to pack quickly and not to tell anyone we were leaving.  I packed up and then got taken straight to the airport on Thursday with my baggage. I ended up not getting on the plane though because I had an expired visa. They detained me until we could show proof I was legal in their country.  So I stayed in the mission home until Saturday.  Until then we just stayed in the mission office watching people leave little by little.  It was so hard.  Everyone was getting reassigned to new missions and having to evacuate.  Sister Foote was so sad, she felt like she was losing all of her kids. It was a sad experience and I do not recommend it.  Some people went to La Reunion with Pres. Foote, some went to Zambia, some went to South Africa, a few of us came to California, and some went to Arizona.  My trainee went to St. George.  Even though we are all over the world, the First Presidency said we will always be "Madagascar missionaries!"

I did not leave Madagascar until Saturday the 21st of October at 3:00.

I got to watch some movies on the long flights over to America. I am pretty caught up with movies now except I held off on Star Wars.  I am still adjusting to the new life style and culture here in California, it is literally the opposite of Mada. I will miss Madagascar a lot especially Pres. Foote. My new mission area is Solemint California that is apart of the San Fernando Mission. My companions are an Elder House and an Elder Bergeron. This morning I had to throw out some of my old beat up clothes and go buy some new ones. I got some new pants and shoes that the mission is going to pay for. My old ones were not acceptable, especially my gray shirts.

I am still pretty sad at the moment about the change. I had to just drop and leave all of my Investigators and members back in Ambohibao. I didn't get to say good bye.  I had a couple of families that were supposed to get baptized last Saturday but now they are not. I am not sure what happened when we didn't show up.  It all just kind of sucks. I hope as time goes on I will adapt more and find a purpose here in California.

I keep being reminded of the recent talk in the last General Conference that said, "Do you have the faith not to be saved?" Sometimes we pray for things that we want and when we do not get what we want our faith decreases. That talk was all about submitting yourself to Gods will and having the faith that whether you get what you prayed for or not God has a plan for you that is for your benefit. It makes me think about my faith in God's plan for me as a missionary. Whether I have the faith in his plan for me here in California or not. I prayed a lot to hopefully one day get to go back to Mada but I think i just need to have the faith not to be saved. I know God has a plan for me here. I will continue to work hard and hopefully one day find the reason that I came here.

Sincerely,
Elder Allen

My mom sent me these thoughts and it made me feel a little better.  These are thoughts from a dad of one of the Elders in my mission in Madagascar.  (Elder Snow's Dad) It helped me see a new perspective and realize that this needed to happen:

"Just random thoughts on all of this:
(1) the Mada missionaries need to be encouraged to SYL (study your language) with each other as much as possible, especially with the newer elders who are going to be missing the language immersion experience they would usually get.  Some, if not all, of them WILL be returning to Madagascar and they'll need to be able to hit the ground running when they do.

(2) I think some people (myself included at first) thought this evacuation was premature. Then I thought about the disaster it would be if they waited until the situation was more serious.  Several neighboring countries were already talking about imposing restrictions on inbound travel from Madagascar.  How do you evacuate the missionaries once that happens? Also, the kinds of things missionaries do every day (going door-to-door, meeting and speaking with large numbers of strangers) are exactly the kinds of things you cannot do when you're dealing with an epidemic of a 100% fatal, airborne disease. And what if a missionary did get sick or even worse, helped spread the disease? As disappointed as we all are, it's pretty easy to see the wisdom in this decision.

(3) The Lord has proven himself to be a master of backup plans, and he has one for this. All of those investigators and members will be provided for and we need to trust in him.  He KNEW this would happen and the pieces are in place for the work to go forward and the elect will not be lost.

(4) Our sons are capable and strong young men who are going through this because the Lord knows they can handle it. It's tough, but part of the mission experience is to find out what you're capable of doing in partnership with the Lord.  This is one of those great unique opportunities.

(5) Everyone needs to read Elder Bednar's talk from the April 2017 Priesthood Session of General Conference https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2017/04/called-to-the-work?lang=eng. It's been quoted below, and it's perfectly inspired, comforting, and timely."

Meeting President & Sister Henrie

Dear Brother and Sister Allen,
Elder Allen arrived today in the Great California San Fernando Mission.  President Henrie and I are excited he is here.  Elder Allen has received his companion and has been assigned to his first area.  All is well.  We look forward to serving with your son as we join with him in the great purpose of inviting others to come unto Christ.
In addition, we would invite you to follow the Great California San Fernando Mission on our Facebook page.  You can find us on Facebook at CASF Mission 2015-2018.  Check in often to see pictures of our mission activities.
Thank you for raising a righteous son who is willing to consecrate himself to serving the Lord.  We will take good care of him.
Love,
